Bumbershoot

The visual arts programming at Bumbershoot is made up of exhibits in both the Fisher and Seattle Center pavilions. The three exhibits in the Seattle Center Pavilion include Found & Unbound, Magic Sync, and After the Riot (details below).

Found & Unbound is a group exhibit of artworks that explores the use of found and repurposed objects. The relationship of mass-produced objects to our natural world and landscape is explored through this collection of sculptures, collages, and videos. Featuring: Animal Charm, Craig Baldwin, Howard Barlow, Justin Beckman, Matt Browning, Scott Fife, Sayaka Ganz, Guy Laramee, Shaun Kardinal, and Jason Mecier. 

Magic Sync is an interactive installation of music, light, and sculpture. By manipulating a control panel, the viewer animates both sculptural and audio elements—in effect, producing a unique re-mix of the piece. 


For After the Riot, Reel Grrls, Seattle's award-winning non-profit media arts and leadership training program, will bring a group of artists who work primarily in combined video and performance mediums, and who are all exploring facets of gender identity, feminism, and body image with a spirit of creativity and inclusion, as well as a sense of humor. Each day, Reel Grrls will present a participatory workshops, conversations, and performances. In between workshops and performances, Reel Grrls’ participants (youth filmmakers and performers) will screen and show their work. Participants in Wynne Greenwood’s Video + Performance classes will open for each of the visiting artists’ programs. After the Riot is coordinated for Bumbershoot by Betsey Brock, Reel Grrls Director of External Relations, and Clyde Petersen, Reel Grrls Technical Director.

Reel Grrls is joined for workshops and performances by artists Anna Oxygen, Gender Failure, Tender Forever, and Molly Mac - as well as presenting new work by Reel Grrls participants in Wynne Greenewood's Video and Performance classes.

Gender Failure: Two of Canada’s most treasured and celebrated trans artists, Ivan Coyote and Rae Spoon, present their acclaimed multimedia show “Gender Failure,” featuring animation and video elements from Seattle artist Clyde Petersen. Through visuals, words, sounds, and original music, “Gender Failure” explores and exposes the prolific pair’s failed attempts at fitting into the gender binary—and ultimately how the gender binary doesn’t add up. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, Coyote brings her razor-sharp timing and powerful narrative, while Spoon adds an ethereal voice and poetic turns of phrase to the dynamic duo’s now seven-year-old artistic partnership.

Anna Oxygen: Anna Huff is a multi-media artist, composer and performer.  She has extensively toured Europe and the United States under the name Anna Oxygen, performing dance pop recitals and interactive performance pieces. Best known for her aerobics live performances,  she has released several albums of electronic and acoustic music, most recently  "This is an Exercise” on indie label Kill Rock Stars.  Her performance and video work  has been presented at PS1 MOMA Contemporary, The Seattle Art Museum, NYU, The Hammer Museum, PICA, and the Rohsska Museet in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Molly Mac is a multimedia storyteller and video installation artist.  She has a BFA in printmaking from UW, an MFA in combined media from Hunter College, and is currently teaching and pursuing postgraduate research at the the Center for Digital Art and Experimental Media at the University of Washington.  Molly performs her work locally in multimedia poetry readings and her video installations have been shown across the US and UK.  She started mentoring with Reel Grrls in fall 2012.
